Saturday, January 7, 2012, saw over 30 MedVent youth and advisors from across Canada, Halifax to Edmonton, gather at York EMS Headquarters in Newmarket ON for the first ever MedVent Roundtable. The goal of the day was to meet other MedVents; discuss the MedVent program and how we can make it better.
The day started with a presentation from National on the Memorandum of Understanding needed to set up a MedVent program as well as the new Scouts Canada insurance policy. It was great to get clarity on many of the new requirements set out in this policy.
The Roundtable was a combination of discussions with youth and advisors together as well as separate breakout sessions. Discussions centred on the topics of recruitment & retention, fundraising, uniforms, and of course training. A significant amount of time was spent on medical coverage for CJ’13 with a request from the organizers for volunteers from across the country. MedVents from both the east coast and the west coast are already in discussion; both groups already have great ideas. The youth spent part of the day in a separate breakout session where they had the opportunity to discuss issues specific to their needs; brainstorm on ways to make the program stronger and generally get to know each other better.
A day of networking occurred with old friendships renewed and new friendships formed; training resources shared and supplier names provided. The feedback that came from all the participants was very positive; all felt that their input was heard and all left with a number of new ideas to try
MedVents or medical venturers are one of the vocational Scouting programs. Like all other Venturers and Rovers their mottos are Challenge and Service. Their mandate is to provide first aid service for scouting and community events. Maybe you’ve seen us in our navy blue uniforms at PJ or CJ providing medical services at the on-site hospital or at first aid posts around the camp; or maybe you’ve seen us at a community event in your area. If you are interested in learning more about us; finding a company in your area or perhaps setting a MedVent group of your own check us out at www.medvents.org
